I’m quickly coming to the conclusion that even though I’m focused on one specific patient, when it comes to that patient, I’m smarter than the vast majority of hospital personnel except for surgeons and specialists. Most of the people wandering around here are well meaning and somewhat well trained, sure, but they simply aren’t that bright. I’m used to this feeling out in the everyday world, but damn it’s frustrating in circumstances like these.

EDIT: Don’t get me wrong, I believe they’re good people doing difficult jobs. But they’ve been trained to follow orders. Hospital protocols, doctors’ orders, conventional wisdom, whatever. And that sort of training naturally filters out creative thinking, insight, and initiative. The people who have those qualities move on either to other jobs or to become, like I said, surgeons and specialists.

EDIT: Hospital-acquired delirium (if you can't figure it out from the name alone, google it) is a candidate for The Worst Thing in the World™. It's like speed-running dementia; what "normally" takes years to develop, and therefore gives you and your family time to adjust, can happen in hours. And then if you're lucky it just goes away, but there's always a chance it might come back.

I was there a few times. It was fine as a landmark and tourist attraction, but if you actually wanted to shop for Japanese stuff, then you’d do better at either the other Japantown in San Jose (6th & Jackson, location of the famous Nikaku Animart) or any of the several Mitsuwa Market / Kinokuniya Bookstore combo locations around the Bay Area.

Haven't been keeping up with J-Pop or anything in ages but I'm going to be volunteering at a hostel in Yokohama for a little over 5 weeks (in exchange for free accommodations). Heading out this weekend. Staying in Shinjuku for a night before heading down to Yokohama. Looking forward to just being able to experience daily life in Japan.

You are going to love Yokohama. You'll never wanna leave. Yokohama is so much more peaceful and chill than chaotic and busy Shinjuku.

Japan Video was one of the places where I would typically browse whenever I was in San Francisco's Japantown, but I hardly ever bought anything there. Maybe a couple of Malaysian DVD sets of J-doramas and a DVD of the 2007–8 Kouhaku, but that's about it. Memory's a bit blurry about which ones, since I bought the same sorts of things online and at Kingstone Books in Pacific East Mall on the other side of the Bay.

Still, it's always a sad day for me when a physical media outlet closes, particularly in the Bay Area and especially when it's a place specializing in Japanese stuff. 20–25 years ago, S.F. Japantown had not only Japan Video, but also two video rental shops and two CD shops — all long gone — in addition to the Kinokuniya Bookstore, which had the best selection of J-pop CDs and DVDs of any of them. Kinokuniya's audio-video selection is now just a shadow of its former self, not much except Studio Ghibli DVDs and anime soundtrack CDs.

Staying Shinjuku for the night wasn't the best choice, but luckily it's my 3rd time in Tokyo so I didn't get lost in Shinjuku Station like I did two years ago. Also I was able to take a train from a station close by all the way to Yokohama Chinatown. Just arrived here and the Chinatown is very pretty. I keep thinking of Maki Goto's "Yokohama Shinkirou" lol

I'm getting all nostalgic! My first Morning Musume。 concert was at Kanagawa Kenmin Hall in Yokohama in 2006, so that was the day I did my sightseeing in Chinatown, only 400 meters from the venue.

Getting lost in a big Tokyo train station is a rite of passage, I think. I don't recall it happening to me in Shinjuku, but I certainly had occasional difficulty finding the right exits at Shibuya and Ueno Stations.
