NO!

That truly breaks my heart. I've been to more live music shows at Slim's than at any other venue: 43 by my count, most recently Juliana Hatfield and Potty Mouth, less than two months ago. Acts I've seen there within the realm of J-Music alone: Deerhoof, The 5.6.7.8's, PUFFY, Silent Siren (twice), and Shonen Knife (eight times). I've seen Exene Cervenka at Slim's fourteen times since 1989. At one of those shows, she gave me a beer; at another, she gave me a hug.

I am worried that my downstairs neighbor might turn into a super-spreader. He has people over to his apartment every single day and I am pretty sure they are usually different people. I hope he will be okay.

I don't see 80% of them, but when I do get a glance at them leaving (or having a smoke break outside) they look different from each other (although most of them have beards and mustaches.

Frequent visits by a large number of different people (as opposed to a small number of close friends and family) is a common indicator of illegal activity. It’s just not normal to have that much traffic going through someone’s home, even during a time like this. In fact, especially during a time like this.

I actually do not suspect that anything illegal is going on. An additional data point: often on the weekends he will have a young person over. If I had to make up a not particularly supported theory, I would guess that downstairs guy used to be married to a female and had a kid but eventually had an epiphany about his sexuality. He divorced and decided to make up for lost time by hanging out on some site like grinder. But, I still worry that this activity has the potential to end badly in a number of different ways.

So he’s not a prostitute, he’s just a slut? I’m not sure that’s any better. Often it’s not the exchange of money that‘s the problem. It’s the promiscuity, the spread of disease (as Shoujo Q noted), the relationship drama (which prostitution actually discourages), the disruption caused by having a bunch of relative strangers hanging around all the time, and so on. And even if nothing illegal is happening now, the lack of familiarity / accountability makes it much more likely that something illegal will happen soon.

And of course there is the whole pandemic thing...

I suggest you go down and talk to him. Make it clear that whatever it is, it’s not okay. You live there too and you have rights. The loitering alone would violate most leases, and the smoking might as well. My own lease has limits on the number of guests allowed at one time and the hours during which they can be on the property, to prevent big parties and improper subletting. Because this is a university town and many grad students live around here.

Or, he might have a large circle of friends that he likes to party with. I have no evidence that sex is going on. As for talking with him, he's never made eye contact with me, so that would be like talking to a total stranger, something I am unlikely to do.
