To tell you the truth, even "in a bittersweet spring" seems a bit off to me. "In the bittersweet spring" is more acceptable to my native Sprachgefühl. Maybe that's because one would say "in the spring" or "in spring" but never "in a spring" (with reference to the season, that is).
