2013 saw a big increase in sales again and the year isn't even over. They'll probably reach 500k+ for total sales by the end of the year.
They used to have to release 10 to 12 singles to reach that amount a couple of years ago. Nowadays only 4.

Total yearly single sales:

2007: 203,848
2008: 102,016

2010: 133,257
2011: 137,450
2012: 282,734

4 songs were released in 2007 -- Average 50,962
2 songs were released in 2008 -- Average 51,008
4 songs were released in 2009 -- Average 54,933
3 songs were released in 2010 -- Average 44,419
3(4) songs were released in 2011 (Due to double A side) -- Average 45,816 (34,362)
4(5) songs were released in 2012 (Due to double A side) -- Average 70,683 (56,545)
3(5) songs were released in 2013 (Due to double A side) -- Average 122,815 (73,689)

Obviously if you produce a lot of songs you have a higher amount of sales, that's why 2008 was so rough and we see the "boost" in 2009 again.
To add some context, Koharu was at 55,679 in sales per releases in 2006 and 52,167 in 2007 in sales-per-releases. So in 2007, 2008, 2010, and 2011 it produced/would have produced a better ratio of sales to albums to produce Kirarin music than it was to release ANYTHING from Morning Musume.

2012 matches 2005 in overall sales-per-releases if you don't qualify each A track as an individual side (which I don't think you should for this but I did anyhow to be fair)

2013, going by sales per song, fits between 2004 and 2003 -- the tail end of the "golden era". Even if you count each individual A side as a single against it, 2013 surpasses 2005 in overall sales per song and fits just after 2004.

^ Super interesting! The Kirarin outselling is amazing. xDDDD

2010, what a year... Onna ga medatte naze ikenai, Seishun collection and Onna to otoko no lullaby game. It coincided with their Paris concert and Eri/Linlin/Junjun graduation. I actually love the songs, but it's true that the songs don't have "anything" to do with sales in the end... I remember asking myself about the future of MM in that moment, but look at them now, LOOK AT THEM.  I've never actually cared about sales, but it's true that if they don't sell much they'd become economically inefficient and it could be the end of the band. But it seems like I don't have to fear anything anymore by now. :__D

2011, there's no double A side single (KONO was not a double A-side)
Well, pretty unfair to calculate the average sales by the number of songs. you cant just calculate the A-side. :fear:
If we really calculate by the numbers of songs, it will make 2013 sales seem pretty much the same as the dark era :yahoo:

2005, all single had only 2 songs each.
2011, all single had only 2(3) songs each.
2013, all single had at least 5 songs each. (6) (6) (5)

2013: 368,445/17 songs = ~21k
2011: 137,450/7 songs = ~19.6k
2010: 133,257/6 songs = ~22k
:fear:
 Just for fun, no hard feeling :lipssealed:

Forgive -- I was counting single sales and not B sides as... well, B sides aren't calculated.

It might be interesting to compare the sales of songs with multiple B sides averse to sales with songs without them statistically.

You can also compare songs with individual B-sides (whether Song 1 with B-side A sold better than Song 1 with B-side B)... but given what B sides are it doesn't really make statistical sense to qualify those as "Single sale" as... well, they aren't singles ^^; Nor does it make, on that point, much sense to qualify them as song sales.

I was really just being polite to show off if you wanted to say "But they released more songs" due to double A sides... more a cute fact than a real one.
