At least half of those alterations are just things like removing shadows and creases. It has nothing to do with AKB - any model including from H!P would get the same exact treatment.
When you take a photo of someone, it amplifies their features, both appealing and unappealing. If the girl is of normal weight, she's going to have a tiny little bulge if she bends in some directions. If she's so skinny as to have NO bulge, then you're going to see her ribs, collarbone and hipbone poking out from some angles. If she has a perfectly smooth face, it will look puffy in some photos. If her face is so gaunt to never look puffy, then it will look angular and sunken in some photos. Etc. Nobody ever has photos that look 100% all the time. Maybe it would be good if no magazines ever photoshopped anything, but we've already traveled down that road.
