I don't quite get this logic upthread. We're nervous about them failing at some indeterminate time in the future. Even though as of right this instant they're a raging success, completely obliterating their competition? Can't we celebrate this moment before we start with the death knells? I mean, why be a fan of anything when it all eventually ends in tears? Plus, this latest result does not in any reasonable sense represent a sustained decline. Their Colorful Era's first week linear regression slope is still strongly positive. Taken as a whole, their first week sales are going up by about 6600 per single, on average.

Anyway, nice performance on CDTV, Particularly, Kudos to Kudou...whatever they did to her eyebrows...she looks great. And the girls seem to be really having fun with the style of this dance routine; it's just so cool.

I know comparatively they are doing great, but I wouldn't say they are "obliterating the competition." C'mon now. They just happen to be picking great days to drop their singles. Put them on a week with strong competition and they won't be number one. Not to say we shouldn't be proud and excited. I think the sales are great, just nervous by the drop from the last two singles.

I think it's a bit of that "Too good to be true"-feeling kicking in too? Because damn, while we have been following them closely for x years, it still feels (at least to me) that all of this attention and invites are all really sudden. @.@; It's a bit scary tbh, what if it goes away by the next single? Hopefully it won't -- I doubt it will. But what if.
For that reason, sales is important too.

I expect them to land at 110k or something. Give or take -- which is still really damn good. Hell, as long as they get weekly #1, I don't even care how much they sell because what will be talked about the most is their ranking and their updating their own record. *-*

And this is exactly why. Sohee hit the nail on the head. This period of success does have a too good to be true feeling, and each single I worry that they will start going back downhill and fade back into obscurity.

But like everyone has said getting this number one again is really amazing and basically negates the drop in sales. The sales aren't really important just yet. But if the next single sells even lower then this I will start getting worried.

Also gotta remember that the previous single had three a-sides and thus three music videos. This one only came with two. That is at least one less copy per collector and that matters too. And with three a-sides, comes three chances for /someone/ to pick at least one edition. This one only has two etc etc.
And I actually think Kimikawa being an Olympic song, might have a bigger impact than the au CM song. CM songs usually just go on to digital download rankings, after all.

Though, that they have two songs in a row that has a tie-in of some kind is pretty damn amazing so I'm not complaining. <3
I hope their next one will be some extra PR that way, too.

Sounds like you already started getting worried

I don't think anyone here is ignoring drop in sales, more like we don't have enough data to even begin making any conclusions either way.
At least for my part, with how many times I rambled and gushed about MM's upward trajectories in this era, I'm just as anxious as anyone to see where they go from here but again I must reiterate, there is not enough data yet to start the handwringing.

It's also a matter of expectations, I suppose.
While I can't help but be disappointed if indeed we're past the peak already, if they can hold steady at the current rate it'll definitely be an achievement not to be sneezed at. No matter the genre, >100k single sales is very, very respectable and hell, I'd argue that excepting the **48 group and maybe Momoclo, that yes... they are obliterating their current competition.

Besides, like you said, as long as they can keep getting weekly 1st hopefully it'll encourage more tv-shows to invite the girls or maybe even nailing another tie-in.

Now if only they'd also do something about their album promotion methods...
