^ Not only seven Oscars, but seven Oscars in key categories: Actor in a Supporting Role (Ke Huy Quan), Actress in a Supporting Role (Jamie Lee Curtis), Original Screenplay, Editing, Directing, Actress in a Leading Role (Michelle Yeoh), and Best Picture. Quan, Curtis, and Yeoh were all first-time Oscar winners, despite being in the business for decades. Ke Huy Quan's story is especially moving: They finished filming the movie right when the COVID lockdown hit, and while the film sat around, waiting to be released, he couldn't get a job. At all. It was such a joy to see his excitement at the Oscars, especially when Harrison Ford (Indy!) read the winner for Best Picture. I was also happy to see the legendary James Hong get some recognition at the ceremony.
"Seinfeld, four!"I was supposed to go to a book club meeting yesterday, but I stayed at home to watch the Oscars and cheer for
Everything Everywhere All at Once. There are few films that I've been so excited to see after seeing the trailer, and there are even fewer films that I've seen three times
in a theater within the first few months of release. (
Star Wars in 1977, before it was "Episode Four: A New Hope"? I can't think of any others.)
