Evil (Paramount+), just 4 episodes into its 3rd season, was renewed for a 4th. So far, it's been pretty great this year!

Season 2 of Reservation Dogs (FX on Hulu) starts August 3rd:

Netflix* is doing a live action adaptation of Yu Yu Hakusho; Kitamura Takumi (lead singer of DISH//) will be playing Urameshi Yusuke:

I've never watched or read YYH before but maybe I'll start now. I like Takumi in DISH//, anyway.

It's a "battle shounen" series like Dragon Ball Z, Bleach, and Jojo's Bizarre Adventure. (Jojo's is actually seinen, not shounen, but I'm including it for this comparison.) High school delinquents, complete with pompadours and uniforms, discover the supernatural world. Encounter monster, get beaten nearly to death, discover new power/attack, defeat monster, repeat.

Unfortunately, it doesn't have the heart or humor of Dragon Ball, nor the epic scale of Bleach, nor the over-the-top style of Jojo's. It's a classic of the genre — one of the first, in fact — but it's very much "of its time" if you know what I mean. I didn't like it. It would need a lot of updating to make it work today.

The full version of Mobile Suit Gundam: Char's Counterattack (1988) is now available (for a limited time) on Gundam's official YouTube channel…

This was the grand finale of the old-school Universal Century (UC) storyline, featuring the years-long rivalry between Amuro Ray and Char Aznable, as told through the original Mobile Suit Gundam (1979–80), Zeta Gundam (1985–86), and Double Zeta (1986–87) series. Pretty much all other Gundam series have been retellings and derivatives of this story, so much so that there is a recognized Char archetype…

https://gundam.fandom.com/wiki/Char_Aznable#Char's_Archetype_(Char_Clones)

There's not really an Amuro archetype, not like there is for Char. Amuro was the heroic everyman called to action, in which viewers — Japanese boys and young men, mostly — could see themselves. If that's an archetype, it's seen throughout pop culture, not just in the Gundam franchise.

For those of you who still go to movie theaters, this coming Saturday, September 3rd, is National Cinema Day: $3 tickets all day long at participating theaters in the U.S.!

I'll be going to a double feature of Grease and Xanadu, in honor of the late, great Olivia Newton-John, at a theater near me.

Literally the only thing giving me a little hope for this one. Tentatively crossed fingers.

Reaching down deep inside…

Spoiler: show
The joke, if you don't get it, is that while Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman are friends in real life, Deadpool and Wolverine have a weird relationship in the comics. Deadpool kinda sorta hero-worships Wolverine, because Wolverine is considered the gold standard for anti-heroes like them, while Wolverine barely tolerates Deadpool as an effective but unpredictable/uncontrollable/undependable freelancer. This HISHE clip captures it pretty well…

So Reynolds and Jackman have satirically copied elements of that comic book relationship into their real-life friendship, as a sort of metaversal fan service. For example…
