I was thinking the only possible reason would be TV exposure.
But that won't happen unless they get Kouhaku which would give them more exposure.

Like another possible contender for Kouhaku is E-girls because their album sold 60k+ and have been getting a momentum and appeared on SMAP x SMAP.

^^They've been getting more TV exposure recently than they have in a long time, though.

And hopefully they'll continue to get it as they keep being relevant. The sudden event to celebrate the third #1 will hopefully call at least some media and HOPEFULLY they will promote their best album, too. And before we know it, it'll be the 21st (or 22nd rather... or 23rd cause 22nd is a Sunday) and they'll probably pop up in the news again since their tour will start and there's usually footage of the first day.

So they knew already that they'd get weekly #1? That would be stuck up.
I'm pretty sure they would have said if so, that if they would get a weekly #1 they would celebrate it. If they wouldn't have gotten #1 they most likely wouldn't hold the event WHICH is why I'm saying it's sudden as it was "decided" on Monday evening as they didn't really know for sure until then.

My point is, though, that they should be able to keep media's attention with it.

And they are having a celebration event on behalf of MM's weekly#1st, can't find links atm but giving away a firework item and a double everything (exp, drop chance etc) on this weekend.
